Research Focus: The Centre for Translation Studies focuses on translation and interpretation studies, whereas my specific research focus is on language technology, computational terminology and knowledge representation. In particular, I have been working on utilizing deep learning techniques to automatically extract terminological information, including terms and conceptual relations, from texts in multiple natural languages and aligning terminologies across languages/representation formats. Furthermore, I am very interest in the concept of embodied cognition and how it grounds and is reflected in natural language(s), especially following the theory of image schemas. Recently, I have started investigating socio-technical aspects of language technologies, e.g. debiasing Neural Machine Translation (NMT) models beyond a binary conception of gender and supporting newcomers to Austria with low-resource language technologies, e.g. translating from Levantine Arabic to standard Austrian German.
